REVIEW: Falling for the villain by M Robinson and Rachel Van Dyken (ARC)

Summary

“Play for me, Juliet…”

Those four words whispered in my ear again and again until I craved what I used to fear. Such a simple demand from my captor—the man who stole me and refused to tell me why he wouldn’t let me go.

I was his.

He made me need him, just as much as he needed me. I broke all the rules of the golden prison he put me in.

During the day he ruled his dark, seedy world. His subjects and me.
During the night—he bowed before my feet.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the villains in all the fairy tales you read?

You’ll soon find out.

It all started when he kidnapped me and made me his pet.
And it all ended with me…

Calling him master.

Review

The authors warn about the content of their book, and you should mind it–it is really an extreme romance. Not only is the context dark, with the mafia and the mysterious Society, but the romance between Juliet and Donovan is one of a kind. Pain, blood and tears are par for the course.

So, yes, it’s a disturbing relationship, with a unique mix of pain and love. But it’s also a beautiful one, as twisted as it is–though a little co-dependent. They need each other to heal, and they certainly find comfort in each other beyond the Dom/sub relationship they establish. And as it progresses, deep feelings are involved, sometimes ending with violence.

There IS gruesome violence in this book, sometimes during intimate situations, and death too. But what bothered me more was the image of the villain that kept repeated. It felt artificial, like an empty justification of the title. Monster, yes. But villain didn’t sound right.

It was a well crafted dark romance though, with characters you can’t help but love.

Quickie

  • Series: standalone (but linked to another standalone by the same authors)
  • Hashtags: #dark romance #mafia #virgin
  • Triggers: kidnapping, dubious consent, hard BDSM, violent deaths
  • Main couple: Juliet Sinacore & Donovan
  • Hotness: 5/5 (but can be disturbing)
  • Romance: 3/5 (it’s twisted)
  • + everybody loves a cold man who becomes emotional
  • I’m not sure I followed the characters’ development arcs…
